I rub my eyes and note the time on my Apple Watch. No wonder Iâm hungry. Iâve skipped lunch and itâs close to five. I shut the filing cabinet drawer and decide to call it a day.
I rarely go to the hospital on a Saturday unless Iâm working the ER. Correction: I never go on a Saturday unless Iâm in the ER. Today was a rare occasion, since the office manager is on vacation and I needed to organize some files.
Could this have waited for her to get back? Absolutely. But I wanted a mindless distraction from Aniston.
It didnât work.
Even though weâre kind of on the same page for feelings, I donât want to get ahead of myself. A more accurate way to put it would be weâre now reading the same book. However, Iâm not sure if sheâs as far along in the story as me.
I daydream about making things official and one day joining her little family. For all I know, she could be stuck on the page soiled by fish slime. Not that our love story is Fly Guy, but whatever.
The last thing I want is to pressure her into moving too quickly.
After straightening a few rogue folders left on the desk, I exit the office, locking the door behind me. I drop the keys in the pocket of my gym shorts and go to my truck.
My stomach growls like a bear in heat, or at least what I assume a bear in heat might sound like. Luckily, none of the Apple Cart residents have brought a bear in to see me. After my stomach growls again, I turn in at Maryâs Diner.
The parking lot is already pretty full. Maybe this isnât a good idea. Hunger overpowers common sense, and I pull to the side and park. Besides, it shouldnât take any longer than going home and having to cook.
I open the door to the sound of voices and forks clinking against plates. Most of the people are dressed in Apple Cart Armadillos red. Some of the kids are sweaty or in cheer uniforms. Then it hits me that football has started.
A waitress passes me with a tray of food. âHello, Dr. West.â
âHey.â I nod and smile on my way to counter. Mary is behind it, with a bandana draped over her hair. The bandana matches her apron, minus the grease stains.
She fans her face with a paper menu as she rings up a customer. After counting back the guyâs change, she spots me.
âHey, sugar.â
âHey, Mary. Can I get something to-go?â
âWhy, of course.â She shuts the cash register door and props her other hand on her hip. âWhat you want?â
She hands me the menu she used to fan her face a moment earlier. I scan it quickly and decide on a steak dinner with potato.
Mary runs my card through the slot, and I type in my PIN. âWhy donât you find a seat, and Iâll have one of the girls bring it out when itâs ready.â
âThanks.â I make sure to add a generous tip and take my card.
